Birthday List Beginnings
When I turned 30, I decided to make a list of 30 things that I had not done that I wanted to try to accomplish in my 30th year. After all, life is short, and I want to go out knowing that I truly LIVED the life that I had. That year's amazing experiences, adventures, and fun times make me want to keep the list going. I've decided to use this blog space to document the adventures...and to update and add to the list each year. To see what I've accomplished, click on the archive links on the right to go to specific items from the list in order of the date they were accomplished. New, partially accomplished, or not started items can be found under "November 2011," since I have the year to work on them. Let me know what adventures you'd like to join me in! You can use the "comment" function to leave me notes. I hope I inspire you to create a list of your own...let me know and if you need someone to join you in your adventures. I'll probably be up for it!

Take Motorcycle Class and get License
So originally, I wanted to rent a scooter and ride around Stone Mountain park, but after driving around the city of Stone Mountain, we found that the scooter rental place had gone out of business...so I'm changing this one to take a basic motorcycle rider course and get my license. The course is offered at the Honda Rider Education Center.
Added to list: 11/22/06 (originally as rent a scooter and ride around stone mountain)

Learn to Play a Recognizable Tune on the Guitar
Although I'm playing with the Barefoot River Possums, I still don't think anything I'm playing is recognizable. So, I'm still working on this one!

Take at least 4 picnics - partially completed
After a wonderful picnic along the Seine (on our trip to Turkey), I decide that I just don't picnic enough. So I wanted to find interesting and fun places to bring a picnic basket and enjoy the outdoors and good company.

So the first picnic was 10/11/2010 at the final Braves vs. Giants playoff game. The coolest thing about Turner stadium is that you can

pack and bring your own food to the game, drinks too as long as they are in sealed plastic bottles (no glass). We brought pasta salad and snacks...and my mom, dad, and I enjoyed the game with Ben and Ben. Go Giants!
The second picnic was 10/17/2010 in
Stratford, Ontario, Canada in the Shakespeare Garden with my mom, Marty, and Steve. We found a picnic table and enjoyed the sunshine and flowers.

Hike to the Start of the Appalachian Trail - partial 3/31/07 and 11/19/06

A group of friends coordinated a trip up to the Len Foote Hike Inn. It's a lodge 5 miles into the woods near to the start of the AT. As it turns out, it's best to hike to the Inn the first night, hike to the AT the next day and spend one more night at the Inn before hiking back home. So I still need to go up and try it again. :)

We had a wonderful weekend. The Inn is eco-friendly with a vermiculture and humanure system for turning wasted into useful fertilizer.

On November 19, 2006, I did an exploratory hike at Amicalola Falls State Park with Krista Kornylo to get a sense of how long and hard it would be to do the hike.

It's 8 miles to the start of the AT and 8 miles back...so the plan is to make it a weekend hike and spend the night at the Hike Inn.

See the Thai Fireflies - Completed 12/7/10
These amazing Fireflies blink in unison. Julie Gerberding brought these to my attention during her key note speech at the American Public Health Association Conference in 2007, and I've been curious to see them myself ever since.
On a visit to Thailand to see my family, my mom, dad, and cousin (Jeremy), took a van up to Amphawa, the little town famous for these fireflies. We rented a long-tail boat and toured up and down one of the tributaries off of the Meklong River not far from where it joins the ocean.
The fireflies love a special kind of tree that grows along the river and when it gets dark, you can see them lighting up the trees. It looked a lot like a string of blinking christmas lights, blinking together to the same beat, these tiny little white lights in the darkness. Apparently there are many more of them during the rainy season (their mating season). The males blink to attract females, but noone can really explain why they blink together.
Photos to be added soon.

Take a Photography Class - Completed 10/6/10
The CDC Foundation offered a photography class taught by David Snyder, a photojournalist hired by the foundation to

show the work of CDC. So I joined in with several other CDC staffers, including my friend Stacey,

to learn some tips about photography. It's only the beginning of this journey, but it was fun and a great opportunity. We practiced what we learned at the CDC day care center. I've posted a few of my favorites.
